Situation

The Old Church sits very quietly on the southern edge of the charming village of Kilmany, a short distance to the north of the popular town of Cupar in northeast Fife.  Quiet and leafy, Kilmany is known for its connections with Jim Clark, the former world champion Formula One racing-car driver, who was born in the village, and there is a statue of the driver by the roadside.  Cupar offers a good range of local facilities and amenities with a selection of shops, supermarkets, pubs, restaurants and the like, while just a short drive to the east lies the ancient and historic university town of St. Andrews, renowned worldwide as the ‘Home of Golf’.  Nine miles to the north, over the River Tay, lies the city of Dundee, home to Scott’s ship RRS Discovery and the V&A.  Dundee provides a comprehensive offering of city shops, services and amenities whilst Perth is just over half an hour to the north-west and Edinburgh about a one hour drive to the south. Surrounding Kilmany is some particularly fine countryside with a lovely mix of farmland, woodland, hill and river.  The area is home to an array of wildlife and provides great scope for the outdoor enthusiast with walking, cycling and riding all readily available.

There are many highly regarded golf courses in the area including the Old Course at St Andrews and the Championship Course at Carnoustie, both of which regularly host the British Open – the 150th anniversary event returned to St Andrews in July 2022.  Ladybank, The Duke’s Course, Kingsbarns, Dumbarnie, Elie, Lundin Links and Crail are also nearby, whilst the wide-open spaces of the Lomond Hills and the pretty fishing villages of Fife’s quaint East Neuk such as Anstruther, Pittenweem and St Monans are within comfortable driving distance.  In terms of days out there are good sandy beaches at St. Andrews, Elie, Kingsbarns and Tentsmuir, along with a number of popular National Trust for Scotland properties, including Hill of Tarvit, Falkland Palace and Kellie Castle.  There are railway stations in Cupar, Leuchars and Ladybank.  Dundee and Edinburgh airports are also well within reach.

General Description

The A Listed old parish church of Kilmany was rebuilt in 1768, is thought to have been dedicated to St Adrian and formerly belonged to St Salvator's College, St Andrews.  The church is a simple rectangle, with a west porch and bellcote.  It is surrounded by a graveyard with stones the earliest of which date from the late eighteenth century, and its use continued into the late twentieth century.  The recent sympathetic renovation of the property has resulted in a most singular and unique three-bedroomed living space set around a central double-height, open plan kitchen/living/dining space with a spacious and flexible mezzanine floor and stunning views to the surrounding countryside.
